Fun with stencils. Shrunken for the site, of course. Feel free to blow these up, print them out and use them. I’m always looking for parking.
I also had to try to one featuring Carol Channing. Because like Godzilla, Carol Channing is awesome.
Bonus fun: turn your speakers up as loud as they go and visit her website.

Spotted on the crosswalk at 75th Street across Madison Avenue in NYC, northwest corner of the Whitney Museum of American Art. I had to jump out of the way of oncoming traffic, but I think it’s made from strips of white tape.

Poster Boy NYC, the (literally) underground New York City subway artist, has added new creations to his Flickr account. Here’s a few of my faves:

SKULLPHONE is taking over Clear Channel billboards all over Los Angeles.
Hacking into the billboard’s computer network today, our boy positioned his trademark skullphone imagery in between the array of flashing movie, TV, and auto company ads that make up the normal paid advertising barrage on the giant illuminated monitors.
If anyone knows how to do this, shoot me an email. There’s a few LED billboards on I-84 that I have my eye on…

Graffiti on sidewalk across the street from Hartford’s Bushnell Tower apartments, at the Carl Andre rock garden.
It’s kind of hard to spot given all the fresh glass shards from broken car windows all over the place, but it looks like the same great stencil style as the stuff down near the Arch Street Tavern and Convention Center.

We just took a bit of a walk around downtown Hartford and noticed (once again) the decided lack of creative use of empty storefronts, bland walls around parking lots, and all the general dead zones. We’re not just talking about street graffiti and tagging–we may be all for creative expression, but somehow (semi) permanently defacing public or other people’s private property has never really been our bag.
We’d like to go beyond graffitti and take it to the next level. And since MechaGodzilla isn’t available, here’s a list of street projects that we’ve been studying online for inspiration in hopes that we’ll all get…inspired. And get up off our asses and do something fun.
● How can you not love the work of Thundercut, a duo from Brooklyn who first made their mark by altering the walk signs around CBGB’s with the universal “rock/don’t rock” signs? For those of you with extra cash to spare–you can now buy the “rock” vinyl decals at their online store.
● The Night Writer courtesy of the Graffiti Research Lab and complete with an instructional video detailing how to fashion and install your own customized LED display (to the “Knight Rider” theme, naturally). How cute would an occasional “Scary Bunnies” sign be about town?
● Last, but not least, an old favorite–reprogramming your cityscape with prizes from Super Mario.
Would it be weird to make and hang up prizes from the Scary Bunnies video game before we get around to creating the actual video game? Nah, we didn’t think so either.
We’d suggest putting “rising stars” on intersections downtown, but we’re kind of sick of that campaign for marketing Hartford.
Feel free to send us links to other ideas, volunteer to help us figure out how LED lights work or hang things, photoshop “wish” entries, or nominate dead space in Hartford for beautification projects.
